"And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem." (Luke 2:38)
This is the season when the spirit of Christmas is upon us. But what is that spirit? Is it a spirit of song because of the Christmas songs we sing? Is it because of special plans we make in
celebration of Christmas, like family visits, gift exchanges, and Christmas pageants? Is it about Jesus Christ?
The first Christmas in Bethlehem had limited, focused celebration for the birth of Jesus. An angelic host announced and sung praises before shepherds in the field. The shepherds glorified and praised God after seeing the Christ child lying in the manger. However, there was another group, not celebrating but waiting. They were people who believed God’s promise of a coming Messiah and they regularly came together at the Temple praying for the day.
May this Christmas season contain a spirit of looking for the promise of Christ’s Second Coming. Though the first coming was somewhat private and reserved in fanfare, this will not be the case at his Second Coming – all shall see. When he comes may he find us faithful to the house of God waiting and praying for our redemption from this temporal life.
