Work Perspective

"… and [Lamech] called his name Noah, saying, 'Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.'" (Genesis 5:29) When Noah was born his father, Lamech, apparently saw something special about his son. While scripture does not provide us great details about the antediluvian (before the flood) period, believers evidently understood the Lord’s promise of a son, born of woman, (Genesis 3:15) who would usher in a renewed creation that would give them relief from the rigors of work. Lamech described work as a “painful toil” the same word that describes the labor pains of child birth. The misery of work continues into the present age. Work remains hard physically, and stressful emotionally. Work often is viewed as time taken from other things we'd rather do. As believers in Christ let’s think differently. Work should remind us of three significant events: (1) CREATION–ORDER. Being productive and creative were part of God’s creation design. Work is good. (2) THE FALL. – Yes, the hardship of work is the consequence for disobedience towards God. Work is hard. (3) RESTORATION – When Jesus returns and we experience the resurrection, work, too, will be redeemed. Work is linked with our hope, Amen! Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2Co 5:17) --E.C.Malone 4/20/15
