“For thus says the LORD: "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip, and bounced upon her knees. As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. “ (Isaiah 66:12-13)
Jerusalem is depicted as a nourishing mother. The time is future when Israel flourishes in a golden age and there is a rich actual consolation she supplies to her children. While Isaiah envisions national Israel in the echelon, Jerusalem already has become the source of comfort through the Lord Jesus Christ and with the inauguration of the church.
When a child is agitated her mother is a source of comfort - nourishing, picking the child up, carrying her about or bouncing her on her knee. Unless there is a deeper problem, a child does not resist a mother’s advances of comfort. The church is God’s means of comfort through communion with the saints, the message of hope from His word, and the active working of the Comforter. Let us take advantage of these blessings. Let God grace flow through us through open and deeper conversations. Let us seek ways of carrying each other’s burdens in ways that lighten the loads that disturb.
Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
