Sonship

June 26, 2015

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…" ( Hebrews 1:1, 2)

God’s ultimate revelation about Himself, about His redemptive plan, the implementation of that plan, and about consummation of the age came through the Son Jesus Christ.

Why does the Triune God employ the concept of Sonship? In the writer’s first argument the key emphasis is relational; Jesus is the Son of God. The title “Son” carries a message that Jesus’ honor and worth derive from the honor of the Father. If the Father is honored, the Son must be likewise honored, cf. John 5:23. Son also denotes “characteristic with”, therefore the Son is by nature like the Father and with the Father. The Son is omnipotent Creator. He was given opportunity to be directly involved in the Father’s work, v.2. Being related to the Father, the deity of Christ is stated not only in terms of power but also identity. Christ is the brightness, the exact reflection of God and the exact imprint of His nature, v.3.

If God-the Father has spoken to us in this final period by the Son, we must without reservation pay attention to him, cf.2:1. Spend quality time with Jesus.
