The Assurance Business

"As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you." (Matthew 10:12, 13)


It’s been quite a number of years but it was not uncommon for certain commercial businesses (e.g. Vacuum cleaner sales, encyclopedias, life insurance businesses) to employ a sales force to make cold house calls. There was also a time door to door evangelistic visitation received welcome. Even though many did not become partakers of the message, people were cordial, inviting and willingly listened. Today, solicitations for the most part are unwelcomed. People have little time for people and definitely with those carrying the Gospel of Jesus Christ.


Reaching the unsaved in an uninvited manner is no longer viable. This is somewhat unfortunate. The Gospel is the greatest and most precious gift one can receive. It costs us nothing. It’s free, but because of private and isolated lives, suspicious of strangers, the gift of eternal life will pass over many.


In Christ I’ve been in the “assurance business” for almost 40 years, and it has become increasing difficult to give away the free gift of salvation. However I realize my job is not to save. My job is to go, to testify, so in the end no one can say God’s grace was not offered.


"Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town." Matthew 10:15
